I just finished reading Austin Kleon’s 10 Things Worth Sharing and these words made my spirit jump.
“The less you know about how you do what you do, the better.”
I am teaching this summer. Today right before I read the above words, I thought about my week. I have been all in the preparation of our projects and learning games. I have been thinking way too much! Yes, I want to teach and most importantly have fun. I am there to work with my students and learn from them.
I have been overloading myself with all this information wanting to do my best. Then came the judgmental thoughts. How about letting go of planning everything all at once. How about trusting your ideas, having some plan but mostly figuring it out as you go along.
That brings me to my creative process. There is only make. Don’t judge your art with a paint brush in your hand. Nurture your creative space. The less you know how to paint, the better your paintings will be.
and so, I scrolled the finger-painted ideas on my board. I found one and began making marks. Here we are.

Idea: Let go, paint, and that judgmental voice will be silenced. You won’t even know she’s talking.
Idea: Look at a painting you love. How could you finger paint the idea?
Then it was on to adding details to my dramatic bouquet project. The flowers were mostly finger painted. I should go back to painting leaves and see what textures and marks my fingers can make. Yes!

Idea: Finger paint roses. Practice using your fingers to make the petal shapes. More on that to come.
The best part of finger painting is that you are putting yourself in the painting. By using your fingers, you challenge yourself to explore ideas. You are into the process and that is all that matters.
Are you finger painting along with me? Please share your work.
