In this post, I’ll be sharing my process as an artist, we’ll read a few quotes from artists regarding their creative process and I’ll suggest a project idea.

I don’t have a consistent list of steps I take to work on a project but here is what I do.

  • Sketch an idea (I will sketch with Neocolors, or a pencil and a notebook if it’s lettering )
  • Most of the time I imagine something in my mind. Then I begin painting
  • I’ll select the tools I’ll use from my craft box
  • Mix my colors for the flowers
  • Paint the first layer which is all the shapes of my flowers
  • Paint the vase
  • Use a Neocolor to draw the leaves
  • Paint a 2nd layer of the flowers. I layer on color to add petals and blend color
  • Mix greens
  • Paint the leaves
  • Do a third layer of adding more petals of color
  • Add details to the leaves or to the vase with more paint or pens.

Wow, ok maybe I do have a process! Here I am writing my process, making me want to paint! I always have an idea. I do have a list of projects. I’ll be doing paper roll flowers and not sure what else but I will post about it.

Process art is about the discovery, investigation, and enjoyment of the materials without the notion of an end result. -Barbara Rucci

Yes! I recently cleaned out all of my original painting folders. All that work was me just painting for the enjoyment of the colors and the paint I used. I had an idea and that was it. There was no attachment to the end result. Come to think of it, that is how I observe kids painting.

Art is freedom. Being able to bend things most people see as a straight line. -an overly exclusive

Yes again! The beauty of art is being in that state of mind that allows you to try without any doubt. You learn and grow. The process strips away all that doesn’t belong and leaves what truly is. That’s why great work comes after we start and create for a while. You only learn art from the actual making of art. You learn what works for you and that gives you momentum and confidence to keep going. What has made the most difference in my creative process is there is only make.

Here is a fun project where you can easily let go and enjoy the process.

Doodle flowers in as many ways as you can. Think of the shapes. Begin with one tool. It can be a pencil or pen. Then as you go add more tools. Gather items like paint, stamps, and different brushes, the bottom of a brush and on it can go.

Use red tempera paint to sketch flowers.

Now that I have written this post I should go and paint. I will after I have lunch. If you tried doodling I’d love to see it. Comment your info below.
