a watercolor painting of six loose abstract flowers.

Painting with my left hand was amazing! I am right-handed, so painting with my left hand and using a large brush created loose, random, and beautiful flower shapes. More of this in my life, please!

I am ready for spring, and that has me painting all of these loose pink and peach flowers. Let me share my process.

Supplies

-big size 14 round brush

-140Ib watercolor paper

-Winsor & Newton watercolor paint

-random supplies like markers, Neocolors to add details

A few notes here. Using a big brush creates looseness in your flowers. Beautiful textures form as the paint dries. You can get creative here and use a makeup brush. As always, use the tools you have. These are just the tools I use.

Painting the First Layer of Your Flowers

I visualized the petals I wanted and started painting them. I wanted an interesting layout, so I varied the sizes of the flowers and petals. With the tip of my round brush, I softly pressed down, leading to the center of the flowers. It’s hard to describe how I paint. I just do. Every artist has a way of how they hold the brush. You just have to paint.

Painting the 2nd Layer of Your Flowers

While the paint is still wet, I would softly brush in yellow or orange into my pink. As the petals dried, I painted the leaves in the same way. I added a touch of pink to the green to create a harmonious color palette.

Here is where I am with these flowers. I might outline the flowers with a gold Posca pen. Now I am thinking pink acrylic paint? I will paint other ideas and come back to this one.

It was a challenge to control my brush movements with my left hand. It is easy with my right hand because I am right-handed. With my left hand, it felt out of place to hold the brush that way. I was curious about what marks I could make. That’s why my flowers look interesting. I was making marks.

Your turn! If you are left-handed, paint with your right hand. Or the idea you are curious about, just do it! For more updates on this painting, I may post it here or on Instagram. It will probably end up in my shop.

Thank you for being here.
