Let me start this post by saying that I am working on filling a journal with finger painted textures, words and flowers. I have a board filled with finger painted tutorials or flowers that I am confident I can finger paint.

In this post, I will be sharing lessons I am learning as I am exploring finger-painting ideas! This is one of my favorite finger-painted flowers. Yes, it is simple and that is why I love it! I am an artist and enjoy painting how nature makes me feel.

Let’s get on to the tips!

Tip#1 Get to Know your Brushes

Ok, you know how you should get to know your brushes to see what marks you can make. The same can be said for your fingers. EttaVee gives us a great suggestion of using your middle finger for the best results. I have used my pinky, middle finger, thumbs and stamping with a closed hand. It is all up to you. Get exploring!

Tip#2 Make sure your paint is just right.

I was finger painting with paint straight out of the tube. I use Liquitex Heavy Body Paint. My strokes were beautiful, but they could have been smoother.

For my yes poster, I was thinking whatever ideas you have yes, let’s do it!

I will not put this in my shop, but it was good practice. I will be painting this again, improving the composition and smoother strokes.

Have your spray bottle on hand or use a brush to add drops of water to your paint. Test out the paint and see what works best.

Tip #3 Use a brush if you have to.

When I finger paint most of my painting is done with my fingers. I will use a brush to paint the centers of my flowers or define leaves. It’s your art you do what you want. Challenge yourself to see what you can paint with your fingers.

Tip#4 Use a paper towel or gloves

I made a mess yesterday! I had layers of paint on my finger. Some of it was dry. Yet I kept on painting. Then I realized I need a paper towel to wipe off one color before I get the next color.

Tip #5 Use whatever paint you want.

I have finger painted with watercolor and yes that was fun! You don’t typically hear about finger painting with watercolor. That is why I had to try it. Use tempera, gouache or acrylic paint. I don’t know about oil paint. Do you?

Hopefully these ideas will get you excited to try finger painting. There is something about making a mess and the feel of the paint on my fingers that soothes me. I am premixing my colors and adding a little water. That way my paint is ready to go. More on that, as I continue to explore and finer paint, I will share my ideas.

Thanks for reading. Comment if you like. It is always fun to chat about art and learn new ideas.
