Neocolours are a wonderful tool! They are watercolors in a crayon. In this post we are going to explore Neocolors and paint roses using Neocolors. I know that tools don’t matter but it is lovely to be that kid in a candy story and try something new. Right!

For this project all you need is a few Neocolors, watercolor paper and a brush.

Art supplies box filled with lots of paint

It is always nice to try something new. When I started my supply collection, I tested out all kinds of watercolor tools. It was fun to try them all and choose the ones that work for me.

I find it better for me to try one tool rather than buy a set and not like them. I can add one tool at a time and build my cool art box. That goes with my idea of not needed certain tools because you can make beautiful art with any tool. Anytime you are feeling creative block, you can open up your cabinet of curiosities and explore. I always do come up with fabulous ideas.

Pros for Having Neocolor Crayons

Pros

  • You get wonderful colors I love going to Blick and picking up a few at a time.
  • I like sketching with crayons but not the wax. Neocolors give me the crayon feel without the wax.
  • Neocolors are watercolor in a crayon
  • These are fun and great for details. Many times, I clean up but want more details. I can use a watercolor crayon to add details.
  • If you are traveling and you can take a few art supplies with you, these are an easy option.
  • You can take your Neocolors and sketch your flowers right in the garden. Then come home, get your water and your brush and paint.
  • Oh, I have done some watercolor finger painting with these Neocolors!

Cons

  • Each Neocolor costs $2-3. Buying them individually adds up fast. I must say that it is nice to get out of the house, go for a walk, land in an art store, and spend $3 on a new tool that you can come home and explore.
  • I wish there was a sharper for these. Sometimes I want fine lines and after much use, the point of your crayon will be flat. Evenso, what fun it is to work with Neocolors.

Before we begin the project, I want to suggest that if your local art store doesn’t care Neocolors, maybe they offer something similar like watercolor pencils or markers. Project time.

Journal page showing how you can use Neocolors

Get to know your tools.

Doodle. Hold it firm and loose. Apply pressure and no pressure as you draw. Sketch light and sketch dark. See what you can do with these tools. Then add water or do the opposite. Here is a journal page with the techniques that I tried.

Paint flowers

Most of this painting was Neocolors. I combined the techniques that I recorded on my journal page. I did use watercolors to add more color.

It was a challenge to use only Neocolors. I use these colors for adding details or sketching a flower design instead of using a pencil. I love the green in the background. The details in the leaves are interesting too. The color scheme isn’t exactly what I intended but I tried not to have intentions. My goal was to fully explore Neocolors. I wanted to let my mind wander and see what I could create.

Final Thoughts

Oh, my goodness, there is a sharpener for Neocolors! Now I feel like I have to go to the art store just to get one. My design was supposed to be all roses. I had another painting that was in my redo pile on my mind. I forgot to try finger painting with Neocolors. There is always tomorrow. This is a painting that I will definitely add to the gallery.

If you have Neocolors, how do you use them?

With Love, Mireya
