Five flowers finger painted with watercolor

Yes, it can be done! In this post, I’ll share my inspiration for fingerpainting with watercolor. You’ll not only want to fingerpaint with me but you will also be motivated to paint your art your way. There are many ways to paint flowers.

To paint your flowers, you will need watercolors, a brush, and a plate so you have room to mix your colors. Oh, if you have tube watercolors you can squeeze a small amount on your palette and add water so it’s spreadable.

The story behind watercolor fingerpainting

My students were working on a project. I don’t know what project it was, but we were using watercolor palettes. I was walking around and guiding my students. Suddenly, a student looked up and said,” Look, I am mixing colors with my finger. I am fingerpainting!” At first, I thought it wouldn’t work. Children always know best.

Today after a busy day, I wanted to relax. I opened up my treasure box and thought about acrylic paint. It would be good to fingerpaint as that is my new project. I settled for my watercolor palette!

I looked at my paintbrushes and then looked at my watercolor palette. Suddenly, I thought about my student who had the brilliant idea to finger paint with watercolor!

How to Paint With Watercolor

There was a moment when I thought, how do I use my finger to paint with watercolor? Use your finger like you would a brush! I dipped my finger in my water cup. I added drops of water to my palette. I was blending and mixing colors. I observed how each of my fingers painted. Some of my fingers painted outside of the lines. I had no expectations. It was beautiful! Again try all of your fingers and see which one you can paint with better. Have fun!

Words of Wisdom

Don’t worry about your art making sense. Don’t judge your work with a paintbrush in your hand. She who thinks good and bad shall not expect to paint great art. Oh, I will turn that one into a poster! Find new ways to use your tools. Have no expectations. Explore. Let your curiosity live. We are all artists!

Now it’s your turn to fingerpaint. I’d love to see your work. Tag me @apaintedgarden on Instagram. If you want more fingerpainting ideas, there are more posts to come. I will be working on my finger-painting flowers all summer long. I want to explore painting with stamps instead of ink too. If you have an idea then let me know.

I should try this today!
