What a morning! Today was a fabulous morning. I loosely referenced a Mexican textile pattern pillow. Painting patterns is an easy way to explore a new medium and practice your regular painting skills. In this post, I’ll share the idea behind my pattern and the lessons I’ve learned.
Let the painting begin!
Organize My Watercolor Palette

I like my palette but there were colors that I don’t use. I didn’t have a decent yellow. I needed room for more pinks and yellows. The half-pans were easy to remove and arrange. Organizing my palette with the colors I used made my painting experience better. I forgot how much I love painting with watercolors.
Painting In Nature
I paint flowers. Of course, I am passionate about nature. There is something about painting in a different place and in a set amount of time that helps the ideas flow. Oh, and it was calm and peaceful outside. Calm and peace always help.
Why is my Mexican textile pattern working?
I had a young heart walk by and say, “I like it.” At that moment I thought, me too. Here’s why. The watercolor paper that I previously said wasn’t working worked out fine! I only had one small brush that I rarely use. No problem. What about a pencil to sketch? What if I make a mistake? I didn’t even care. There was a warmth that said keep going. It was one of those moments where I could paint like this for hours. I could have but I had only 45 glorious minutes.
I had to post my pattern because I have been wanting to paint a colored textile pattern. The bird in the center of the painting represents nature and how painting makes me feel like I can fly. Mexican textiles are my culture.
Thank you for reading! Right now I’ll hold off on the 30-day painting challenge. I definitely will be posting more. I have an artist quote and project coming up.
