Don’t Be a Hoarder is a chapter in Show Your Work by Austin Kleon. I wrote a post yesterday on why we may think our art is ugly. I proposed that we should only think about ourselves and our ideas when we are creating.
I want to clarify that our ideas should include all the weird and wonderful things we see. That may mean a favorite painting, a beautiful breeze, butterflies, a hedge shaped like an elephant, or the biggest spider web I have ever seen. Yes, I saw all of these on my walks. I found an incredible book called Color Me Floral.
There is something so peaceful when I notice a beautiful flower, see a white butterfly, and then a Monarch. It’s all of these treasures that we should be painting with. What I feel as I am spotting weird and wonderful things is the same as I am painting. I am exploring tools, and not afraid to make a mess.
On this lovely Sunday and and the week ahead, why not go for a walk or browse online for something that you are curious about.
With Love,
Mireya
