(I have made a few changes)

Do you have a favorite artist? Artists can draw you in and have you saying wow, I want to try that! An artist’s work can remind you that everyone is an artist. Their process lets you know that we all go through awkward phases but the beautiful work always reveals itself. The following six artists are artists I reference a lot because they help me embrace who and what I am as an artist.

Let’s get to the list!

Carrie Schmitt

I love how she turned a time of challenge into beautiful paintings. She’s an abstract flower artist. She hosted an online painting party. Watching her paint flowers was magical. There was no sense of right or wrong. She simply painted. I have always doodled flowers. That’s why I paint by the idea that there is no right way to paint a flower. Oh, and I would love to host a tea painting party.

Austin Kleon

His blog is one of my favorite blogs. The title of his recent post is Success Means You Get to Do It Again Tomorrow. His books are great too! I am always learning something new. The most important lesson is show your work.

James Victore

I learned about James Victore through a Skillshare class called Radical Typography. This was during my hand lettering days. Watching how he modifies a marker before he writes inspired me to get to know my tools and embrace my ideas. I have learned not to be afraid to cut the tip of a $6 marker. Most importantly, I have learned to paint. No excuses. I am an artist. I was born with that gift. This is my favorite James Victore quote.

The things that made you weird as a kid, make you great today!

This weekend I should watercolor some of my thoughts. Turn them into posters for my shop? Let’s! I’ll share a bloom from my Wild About You Project.

And yes that is my handwriting. I used to be embarrassed by it but love it, hearts and all.

Shantell Martin

I love Shantell’s black marker doodles on white surfaces. I can watch her draw for hours and wonder how. She makes me feel like there’s room for me too. There’s room for all of us. Occasionally, I’ll see her work at a museum or a collaboration project. Shantell reminds me that we all have our uniqueness in drawing, creating, painting, and wherever our canvas is.

This is how I like to draw.

Suzanne Allard

The biggest lesson that I have learned from Suzanne is that if I don’t like it, I can layer over it. Painting is all about the process. Have a sketchbook, let go, and see what happens. This is where your best work comes from! Wait I think Suzanne inspired me to purchase a sketchbook and not be afraid to use it.

Jessi Raulet

Jessi is about pops of color. I have been referencing her in my posts a lot. I want my abstract flowers to be pops of color on your walls and in your life. Oh yes, I like that! What I have learned from Jessi’s brush strokes is to trust the process.

There is my list! I smiled. I thought about how I now teach art. I’ve inspired myself too. Go check out these artists. Let me know which is your favorite. Do you have a favorite artist that is not on this list? Do tell. I can gather the info and maybe do a fan-based favorite artist.

Together we bloom in abundance.
